Susie Saavedra is the Vice President for Policy and Legislative Affairs at the National Urban League where she brings nearly two decades of federal legislative, policy and advocacy experience to her passion for advancing social and economic justice. In this position, she is responsible for leading the Washington Bureau's policy team in the development of policy priorities and legislative strategies that advance the National Urban League's economic empowerment and civil rights agenda before Congress and the Administration.
Prior to joining the National Urban League, Ms. Saavedra spent ten years working in both the U.S. House and Senate for four Members of Congress including as a legislative aide for former Senator Hillary Clinton and as a legislative director for Representatives Joe Baca, Al Green, and Karen Bass.
She is active in various professional associations and non-profit entities and has served as president for both the Congressional Hispanic Staff Association and Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Alumni Association. She is currently on the boards of the Hispanic Lobbyists Association and The George Washington University Trachtenberg School of Public Policy & Public Administration (GWU TSPPA).
Ms. Saavedra received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Denver and a Master in Public Administration from The George Washington University (GWU).
She is the 2018 recipient of the GWU TSPPA Distinguished Public Service Award given to alumni for their outstanding public service and achievements in the fields of public policy.
