Susie Saavedra is the Senior Director for Policy and Legislative Affairs at the National Urban League Washington Bureau where she brings over 15 years of federal legislative, policy and political experience to her passion for advancing social and economic justice.
In this newly created role, Susie is responsible for directing and overseeing the Washington Bureau’s policy team in the development of public policy priorities and advocacy strategies that advance the National Urban League’s economic empowerment and civil rights agenda. As such, Ms. Saavedra promotes the Urban League’s policy objectives externally through strategic advocacy before Congress and the Administration as well as through targeted education and outreach to business leaders, advocacy organizations and other key stakeholders and partners. She also coordinates the work of the National Urban League Affiliate Policy Taskforces, keeping the Urban League movement and Affiliate leaders informed and engaged regarding the impact of major state and federal policy issues on Urban League programs and core constituents.
Ms. Saavedra continues to serve as the League’s chief education and health policy officer, a responsibility she has held since 2013 and currently leads the work of the Health Equity and Accountability Act (HEAA) Community Working Group.
Prior to joining the National Urban League, Ms. Saavedra spent a decade working in both the United States House of Representatives and United States Senate for four Members of Congress as a Legislative Aide to former Senator Hillary Clinton and as a Legislative Director for Representatives Karen Bass, Al Green and Joe Baca. She also promoted diversity in the halls of Congress as former President of the Congressional Hispanic Staff Association (CHSA) and has advocated for expanding opportunities for Hispanics in higher education as a governing board member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). Ms. Saavedra currently serves as the Vice President of the Hispanic Lobbyists Association which is dedicated to building diversity in the government relations profession.
Ms. Saavedra received a Master in Public Administration (MPA) degree from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree from the University of Denver.
